QUANTIFYING MUSCLE FUNCTION
TMG Tensiomyography
Quantifying muscle function tmg
TMG Tensiomyography is an evidence-based method that accurately measures muscle contraction speed as well as muscle stiffness. It is mainly used in performance, rehabilitation, sports medicine and research.
TMG Tensiomyography is a fast-evolving technology that is non-invasive, practical, quick and reliable. It helps to measure the progress of rehabilitation or training and, as a result, provides an objective assessment of the efficiency of a given treatment protocol. Certain properties of muscle contraction that it measures are important parameters for health and exercise professionals, who are looking for a true assessment of the condition of an individual muscle.
The strengths of TMG Tensiomyography are its simplicity, its flexibility and its compatibility with other methods and applications, in or out of the field. Athletes can be assessed individually and, as a result, rehabilitation or performance can be guided with greater precision. Unlike static medical imaging, TMG reveals the true functional capacity of muscles without excessive cost, time or travel.
The assessments are painless, require no effort from the athlete and can be carried out even during the acute phases of an injury to obtain essential, clear and objective references.
Researchers, as well as rehabilitation and sports medicine professionals, share a need for relevant, objective information so that decisions can be made more quickly and more effectively.
TMG provides this in an efficient, quick and simple way. In addition, the information on muscle function cannot be duplicated by any other modality.
Performance
Individualise training plans
- Profile athletes
- Injury prevention
- Detection of weak links in kinetic chains
- Readiness monitoring
TMG provides the athlete’s muscle profile and, as a result, it is possible to know which muscle needs to be trained or to recover. Coaches need to increase performance and assess risks. TMG thus supports health and exercise professionals with detailed, quantitative knowledge about their athletes.
Sports Medicine
Objectively assess functional muscle disorders
- Return-to-play decisions (not predictions)
- Manage risks
- Analysis and assessment
- Rehabilitation monitoring
Health professionals face the challenging need to assess risks, thereby reducing non-contact injuries and ensuring that the return to play does not result in a new injury. In this way, TMG can help to solve these three problems quickly, accurately and objectively.
Research
Support for visible scientific publications
- Diagnosis of acute and chronic muscle changes
- Non-invasive determination of muscle composition
- Detection of local muscle fatigue
TMG is used by some of the most important research institutions in the world, thus helping to detect acute or chronic changes in the muscle’s ability to contract/relax. The novelty, relevance and credibility of the information presented in a specific publication can significantly affect its impact. Tensiomyography has been used in more than 100 scientific articles.
MEASUREMENT PROTOCOL
TMG is used to monitor the displacement of the radial muscle belly under isometric conditions. The displacement sensor is positioned perpendicular to the tangential plane at the largest area above the muscle belly. The displacement of the muscle belly (increase) during contraction is observed and monitored. The experimental set-up is used, in this way, to measure the isometric contraction responses of the biceps brachii. The TMG sensor measures radial muscle displacement during contractions induced by short electrical stimuli. Two self-adhesive electrodes are placed around the TMG sensor. The anode is placed distally and the cathode proximally, 20-50 mm from the measuring point. The bipolar electrical stimulation consists of a single DC pulse of 1 ms duration.

TMG PARAMETERS
- Delay time (Td) — time between the electrical impulse and 10% of the contraction
- Contraction time (Tc) — time between 10% and 90% of the contraction
- Sustain time (Ts) — time between 50% of the contraction and 50% of the relaxation
- Relaxation time (Tr) — time between 90% and 50% of the relaxation
- Displacement (Dm) — maximum amplitude of the muscle contraction
